The Laying Woman is a etching, that consist in marking (engraving) a copper plate covered in varnish with a sharp tool. The plate is then dived into acid, making the incisions permanent. In this case the plate was subjected to a second process called aqua tinte; covered with a resign (breu). With varnish we protect the areas to be preserved and then plunge the plate into acid again. The darker the final tone, longer the area was exposed to the acid. After that the plate is ready for printing, receiving a good amount of paint and pressed with the paper using a special press. The final image on the paper is the mirrored version of the drawing originally engraved on the copper plate.
